CAPE TOWN, 30 November 2016 – PetroSA, the Petroleum, Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (SOC) Ltd., is putting its money where its mouth is, with an announcement that it is investing R1, 5 million towards the modernisation and refurbishment of 21 Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in the Southern Cape.

The investment will see 21 ECD centres located in Mossel Bay and surrounding areas in the Southern Cape benefiting. Each ECD centre will receive R70 500 for much-needed refurbishments. More than 500 children will benefit from the investment.
These refurbishments will include:
  • Repairing ceilings,
  • The renovation of kitchens at some of these creches,
  • Installation of toilet seats and flushing mechanisms in ablution facilities,
  • Repairs to damaged windows,
  • Installation of gutters,
  • Installation of security features, and
  • Installation of play areas, among others.

The donation is part of PetroSA’s dynamic Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme, which supports initiatives across the country to develop impoverished communities, the empowerment of women and assists in the construction of health, education and environmental sustainability infrastructure. Over the last 10 years PetroSA has invested R356 million towards these initiatives. Of this amount, R227 million has been invested on initiatives in Mossel Bay or the greater Southern Cape area.

Kholly Zono, the PetroSA Acting Group CEO, said the investment represented a continuation of the company’s commitment to Mossel Bay and the Southern Cape.
“We are committed to assisting with development in this area, and see this as a rewarding partnership towards the development of Mossel Bay and the surrounding areas,” Mr Zono said.

In May 2016 PetroSA announced a commitment to fund development projects in the Southern Cape valued at R41 million. These included the Mossel Bay-based R8, 5 million Siyanithanda Centre for Children Living with Disability. The state-of-the-art centre is one of only two in the Southern Cape region offering a curriculum and rehabilitation services to children living with severe physical and/or mental disability.
The ECD funding is a partnership between PetroSA, the Mossel Bay Municipality and Western Cape Department of Social Development.
